The "pony car," the first of the muscle cars, was named after the successful World War II fighter airplane, P-51 Mustang, and first rolled off the manufacturing floor in 1964. Considered part of the first generation of Mustangs, before Ford decided to bulk up the body, it kept its more sportscar-like physique. The 1965 Mustang model became Ford's most successful vehicle launch since the Model A's release, selling their millionth Mustang before the end of its second year.
